Peanut Butter Rice Krispy Pralines

1 1/2 cups white sugar
3/4 cup light brown sugar, packed
1/2 cup milk
6 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/3 cup peanut butter
1 1/2 cups Rice Krispies
Lay out a large sheet of waxed paper and spray with cooking spray. Make sure to do this before starting to cook the pralines.
Combine the sugars, milk, butter and vanilla extract in a large pot, at least 4 quarts, over medium-high heat. When it comes to a boil, stir constantly for 3 minutes while the mixture is bubbling. In the last 20 seconds, stir in peanut butter.
Remove from heat and stir constantly until the mixture thickens and becomes creamy and cloudy. Stir in Rice Krispies, then spoon out onto the greased waxed paper.
*For traditional pralines, omit the peanut butter and rice krispies and add 1 1/2 cup chopped pecans to the pot with all the ingredients at the beginning of the recipe.

Basic Guacamole!!!

Ingredient's:

4 hass avocados (about 7 oz. each), preferably organic
1 serrano chile, stemmed and minced
1 small clove garlic, minced (optional)
2 tbsp. finely chopped white onion
2 tbsp. finely chopped seeded tomato
2 tbsp. chopped cilantro, plus more for garnish
2–3 tsp. fresh lime juice, plus 1 lime cut into wedges
1/2 tsp. salt, plus more to taste
1 bag good-quality tortilla chips

Directions:

In a medium bowl, mash the avocado flesh with a fork until somewhat chunky (not smooth). One at a time, gently stir in the chile, garlic, onion, tomato, cilantro, lime juice and salt. Cover with plastic wrap touching the surface and let sit for about 2 hours to allow the flavors to develop.
Season with salt to taste (remember that tortilla chips are salty). Transfer the mixture to a serving bowl, garnish with a sprinkle of cilantro and serve with lime wedges and tortilla chips.

Sweet Pea Guacamole! I love this guacamole, not only because it is sweet and delicious, but it looks so pretty.

Sweet Pea Guacamole

•1 and 1/2 cup of fresh, shelled peas, blanched, or one bag of defrosted, frozen peas (make sure they are patted dry)

•1/2 cup minced red onion

•1-2 minced garlic cloves

•2 teaspoons lemon or lime juice

•Chopped cilantro (to taste)

•Dash of Worcestershire

•salt and pepper, to taste

•Dash of hot pepper sauce to taste

Pulse all but the lemon or lime juice in your food processor (or mash by hand).

Stir in lemon or lime juice and garnish with slice of lemon or lime.

Use a small, narrow jar for this Valentine's Day gift in a jar idea - fill with layers of jelly beans, cinnamon hearts or your favourite Valentine candy, then decorate with heart shaped lollipops, heart shaped candy and tiny roses.

Valentine's Day Candy Jar

Materials List:

narrow glass jar with tight fitting lid

red and white jelly beans, or other appropriate Valentine candy

red heart shaped lollipops

5 or 6 miniature roses

two heart Valentine candies (brand shown is "swizzler"

small white or red paper doily or decorative fabric

gold braid or thin ribbon

glue gun and glue sticks

Valentine Candy Gift in a Jar Idea

Instructions:

Layer the jelly beans in the jar and secure the cap tightly.

Decorate the lid by attaching a red or white paper doily or a circle of decorative fabric. Secure with a rubber band, then cover the band with thin gold braid or ribbon, tied in a bow.

Attach two or three miniature roses to each heart shaped lollipop, using the wire stems of the flowers to secure in place at the base of each lollipop.

Decide on the appropriate placement on the jar for the first lollipop, and hot glue in place with a small dollop of glue under the clear cellophane wrapper. Repeat with the second lollipop, crossing it over the first as shown.

You may need to secure the lollipops with a small amount of glue at the cross-over point on the lollipop handles.

If using the "swizzler" heart candies, or another decoration, position above the roses, and glue in place on the cellophane sucker wrapper.

The Walnut Park Historic District is located in the University Hill neighborhood of Syracuse, New York, adjacent to the Syracuse University campus. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

Walnut Park

The park was deeded to the city in 1870 by prominent citizen George Comstock. Walnut Park is itself a three-block long park. The long sides of the park are bordered on the west by Walnut Place, on the east by Walnut Avenue. Cross streets are Harrison Street, Adams Street, Marshall Street, and Waverly Avenue from north to south. The park was originally landscaped with shade trees, but the Dutch Elm disease wiped out that overall effect in the 1950s. In 1972, new trees were planted. These trees have reached maturity and restored some of the original atmosphere to the park.

Establishment of the Neighborhood

The neighborhood surrounding Walnut Park was originally established by some of the social elite of Syracuse. Community leader and banker George Comstock, after donating the property for the park, chose carefully the people to whom he sold building lots.

George H. Bond had the house at 304 Walnut Place built in 1899. He was Onondaga County District Attorney, and founder of the still existent law firm of Bond, Schoeneck and King. The house reflects elements of both the Queen Anne style popular up to that time and the Georgian Revival style becoming popular. The house was later owned by Syracuse University and known as "Blackwell Cottage". It is now the home of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.

The house at 701 Walnut Place is now owned by Syracuse University and known as the "Chancellor's Residence". It was built for attorney William Nottingham in 1901. The house was designed in the Jacobethan Revival style by architects Brockway and Benson of New York City. Leather lines the library walls. The living room ceiling is decorated with Gothic tracery. The central staircase is carved. A ballroom graces the third floor.

The Chateauesque house next door at 703 Walnut Avenue was built for Crucible Steel owner and president Horace Wilkinson in 1905. Gaggin and Gaggin architects of Syracuse designed it. The interior woodworking is various and impressive. Theodore Roosevelt, while engaged in the Barnes-Roosevelt libel case, stayed here as a guest of the family for a month.

Other notable Syracusans that built their homes here included clergyman and archbishop the Reverend Huntington, A.E. Nettleton of the Nettleton Shoe Company and Paragon Plaster, and the Denison family.

Fraternity/Sorority Row

In 1915 the Alpha Phi Sorority bought the house at 308 Walnut Place. Around 1921 the houses at 208 and 210 Walnut Place and the one at 901 Walnut Avenue all became sorority or fraternity houses. In 1923 house at 300 Walnut Place was sold to the Delta Delta Delta Sorority. The house at 310 Walnut Place was built around 1925 for the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity and the house at 803 Wanut Avenue was built for Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. In 1928, Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority had local architect Marjorie Wright design their Tudor style house at 306 Walnut Place. In 1937 the house at 907 Walnut Avenue also became a "Greek" house. Over the following decades, more fraternities and sororities moved in, making the area the Fraternity/Sorority Row of Syracuse University.

Block Party

Walnut Park was the traditional home of Syracuse University's "Block Party", an event celebrating the coming of spring with live entertainment in an outdoor setting. In 1993, amid concerns of over-crowding and excessive drinking, the University moved the event to a more readily controllable indoor venue.

Syracuse is a city in and the county seat of Onondaga County, New York, United States, the largest U.S. city with the name "Syracuse", and the fifth most populous city in the state. Syracuse area schools reopen

One week ago I blogged about the strength of our public health system in this country, in our state and on the local government level. Those public health administrators have now had a couple of weeks to examine all the data involving this H1N1 virus A.K.A. swine flu. The investigations have developed a stable picture of a viral spread that is behaving in a similar fashion to seasonal flu. Illness for those who have tested positive has been mild. Armed with that data health professionals are showing us science can win over fear.

The three school districts in our area with H1N1 cases closed in different ways depending on the timing of their discovery of a child sick with this flu. Fabius-Pompey had the first case. They followed initial CDC guidance and closed for a week. Then the guidance adjusted to two weeks. Fabius-Pompey followed along. Over the weekend the Syracuse schools decided to shut Ed Smith School after a probable case. They closed for just one week because they could see a better picture developing over the nature of the virus. Last night Sandy Creek closed for just two days. They all made the right call.

This afternoon the Centers for Disease Control made a fresh call on school closings. Health professionals could see this one coming. Schools should not close unless they have a high number of illnesses in their building. No one does. It is welcome news to families across the country and should begin to ease the fear that fueled the run on face masks. It appears this flu is no more troubling than the seasonal flu. In fact, so far its case history shows it is less of a problem.

Those who overreacted to the word that Swine Flu was spreading should examine what made them so afraid. There were cases of discrimination among us. People who were not sick were labeled as too risky to be present in their everyday circles simply because they had visited Mexico. Worldwide, pigs were slaughtered without any scientific merit. We had an otherwise healthy woman on the news wearing a mask wondering why nobody else was wearing one.

Taking the lead in Central New York guiding us through this Swine Flu scare is Dr. Cynthia Morrow. She is Onondaga County's Health Commissioner. She proved her abilities long ago in handling public health issues, but she has never shined as brightly as this ten day period. Her steady hand, communication skills and extensive knowledge has helped ease public fear and aided school administrators in need of guidance.

A healthy tan!Everyone loves a nice glow, but who wants to risk the harmful effects of the sun? I know we all (especially those of us in the midwest) are desperate to get rid of that Casper white color once the temperature is nice enough for shorts. But before you turn to a tanning bed or your nearest beach, try a mineral bronzer to give yourself a healthy glow.

I've tried bronzer before,
it made me look orange and/or dirty

This is very common of the bronzers we're used to, but mineral bronzers are natural and very forgiving. Plus, a lot has to do with how you apply your bronzer. It's not hard, but there are a few simple steps you must follow if you want a beautiful sun-kissed tan.

The secrets

First cleanse and gently exfoliate your skin as you normally do. Apply a moisturizer and wait 10-15 minutes before applying your makeup.

Apply your concealer and foundation as you normally would. Even if you are already tan and the bronzer matches your skin tone, I recommend using a veil under your bronzer to aid in oil absorption.

Once you're done with your foundation, use your kabuki brush or another big powder brush and apply a small amount of your bronzer to your brush.

Gently sweep the brush across your forehead, down the bridge of your nose and around the tip of your chin (like you are making the letter "U").

Add a bit more powder to your brush, making sure to tap off the extra and gently brush the bronzer down the hallows of your cheeks and then to the apples of your cheeks (you are basically making a soft outline of your face).

I also like to brush it across my eye lids and my neck and chest.

Set your bronzed look with a translucent or tan veil.

Other tips

If you apply too much, tap off the brush and blend until you remove the excess.

Don't stop at your face! You can use mineral bronzers on the rest of your body, too.

Skip the sweaty pantyhose and apply bronzer to your legs for a night on the town.

A light shimmer eye shadow and nude glossy lips top off a beautiful summer tan.

Fox, who has channeled his fame into fighting the degenerative neurological disorder that struck him when he was just 30 years old, has been on the road to promote his latest book "Always Looking Up: The Adventures of an Incurable Optimist," also the name of this week's TV special on ABC.

The book is an extension of his earlier best-selling memoir "Lucky Man," but the TV show explores more journalistically - in what he calls a "Charles Kuralt-y way" - the theme that has shaped his post-diagnosis life. It took him to Bhutan to learn about Gross National Happiness, to the golf range to discuss positive thinking with Bill Murray and to England, where a scientist confirmed what Fox knew intuitively. He's a pretty cheerful guy, even though he is also, as he calls himself, a "human whirligig."

"She has this test she developed where she identified genetic markers of people who have increased serotonin output and are born optimistic, and she did it on me," Fox, 47, said in a recent phone interview. "There is a second part where you are given a series of images, one horrific and one benign or sentimental, and depending on how you respond, it is further proof. I was attracted to positive images."

Fox came to San Francisco on Friday to talk about his career as an actor, activist and optimist at a sold-out event sponsored by City Arts & Lectures at Herbst Theatre and a later fundraiser to benefit his foundation that's dedicated to seeking a cure for Parkinson's. The appearance at Herbst was a different venue for Fox, who has talked lately with Katie Couric, Jon Stewart and Jimmy Kimmel. This time he took the stage for the first time with the other Michael in his life, his wife Tracy Pollan's brother, the writer Michael Pollan.

The two Michaels, one tall and thin, the other short and thin, are used to talking around the kitchen table. Fox lives in New York with his wife and three kids (oldest son Sam is now at Stanford University) and Pollan is an award-winning writer known for his investigations into agriculture and the American diet and is a professor at UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism. The two are also a mutual admiration club. Pollan, Fox said, was his writing coach, teaching him the beauty of a good metaphor. "To have someone offer to teach you to write..." said Fox. "One time I was really down. It was all about me and I said, 'Who gives a crap?' and Michael said, "Hey, I write about angiosperm.' "

Fox, Pollan said, has an irrepressible spirit and sense of humor, never seeking the limelight at home, instead taking his place as one more character in the extended family of "extroverts and eccentrics."

"He's just Mike, or Uncle Mike, or as his daughter calls him 'Shaky Dad,' " Pollan said in his introduction, which included a short video with classic clips from "Back to the Future," "Spin City," "Family Ties," "Stuart Little" (in which Fox provided the voice for the animated star rodent) and his most recent acting foray, "Rescue Me," where he plays a character who does not, to put it mildly, share Fox's optimism in the face of challenge.

From the moment Fox walked onstage with the slow characteristic gait of someone with Parkinson's, he drew bursts of applause from the audience. Some were donors to his foundation or also suffer from the disease, but all were clearly fans.

Fox looked boyish in a black blazer and jeans. His symptoms, the bobbing and weaving that are only partially controlled by medication, were easy to forget as he began talking. Born in Canada, Fox started acting at 15, then dropped out of high school and moved to the United States at 18. He had early huge hits - "Family Ties," where he met his co-starring wife, and Steven Spielberg's "Back to the Future" movies.

First symptom
In 1990, he had his first symptom, a twitchy pinky finger. Diagnosed a year later, he kept the illness secret for seven years, and continued his run on the series "Spin City." Initially, he said, he worked more and drank more. He tried in vain to hide symptoms until, he said, logistics instead of creativity consumed most of his effort. Eventually, he quit drinking and realized he would have to go public and alter his career.

Leaving acting work - at least as his mainstay - was surprisingly easy, he said. He recalled an epiphany during a trip to Hawaii's Turtle Bay, where he jumped in the water to see a rare sea turtle swimming near the reef and stayed out long after the rest of his family went back to shore. He noticed an injury on the turtle's flipper as it made its way around the reef and was struck, he said, by its "survivorhood."
